Why homeowners upgrade their electrical panel.

⚡ Capacity for modern life

Older 100-amp panels weren’t built for EV chargers, heat pumps, induction ranges, hot tubs, or backup batteries. A 200-amp service unlocks all of it.

🔌 EV charger ready

Level 2 EV chargers (40A+) usually require a panel upgrade. We size and install both at once, pass the permit on the first try.

⚠️ Federal Pacific & Zinsco

If your panel says Stab-Lok, Federal Pacific, or Zinsco, your insurer may require replacement. Documented history of breakers failing to trip.

🏠 Selling or buying

Home inspectors flag aging panels. A modern 200-amp service with surge protection protects an offer or your insurance binder.

🔋 Generator-ready

Whole-home Generac and Kohler installs need a transfer switch and adequate service. We do generator installs too.

🛡️ Insurance demand

If your insurer or buyer’s inspector flagged the panel, we can get an estimate today and most upgrades scheduled within 1–2 weeks.

⚠️ Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Zinsco panel?

These panels are widely associated with breakers that fail to trip during overcurrent — a real fire risk. Many WA insurers now require replacement before binding or renewing coverage. We replace 2–3 of these every week as part of our electrical panel upgrade Tacoma services and the South Sound.

Honest, upfront panel pricing.

Every home is a little different — but here’s the realistic range we quote on most electrical panel upgrade jobs in Tacoma and the South Sound. Final price set after on-site inspection.

  • * INDICATES A REQUIRED FIELD

From estimate to permit closed — usually under two weeks.

1. Free in-home estimate

A licensed electrician inspects the existing panel, service drop, grounding, bonding — and gives you a fixed-price quote on the spot.

2. Permit & utility

We pull the L&I or city permit and coordinate the temporary shutdown with PSE or Tacoma Power. Usually 3–7 business days.

3. Install day

Power off in the morning, new service mast / meter base / 200-amp panel installed, all circuits relabeled, power back on by dinner.

4. Inspection & sign-off

L&I or city inspector signs off within a few days. We schedule, meet, and close out the permit.

Panel upgrade questions.

How long is power off?

Typically 4–6 hours during install. We coordinate the disconnect with PSE or Tacoma Power so it lands at a time that works.

Permit handling?

Yes. Every electrical panel upgrade in Tacoma requires an L&I or city permit. Tapps pulls it, schedules inspection, meets the inspector, closes the permit.

Panel + EV at once?

That’s the most common bundle. Doing both on a single permit is significantly cheaper than two visits.

FPE/Zinsco risk?

Independent testing shows elevated rates of breakers failing to trip — a fire risk. Many WA insurers require replacement.

Insurance discount?

Often yes — especially when replacing a flagged panel. Send your insurer the closed permit and paid invoice.

Residential or commercial?

Tapps does both. Same union electricians, same standards, scaled for your home.
